The other night while we were eating dinner together, Precious Jewel rather sheepishly but proudly declared, "Daddy and mommy, I learned the f-word and s-word in school today.."
Choke! Gasp! Cough! Try not to spit out food! Luke and I looked at each other wide-eyed and I calmly (if not shakily asked), "What do those words mean honey? Just whisper it to mommy."
Now back up a whole year. Last year Abigail was home schooled for kindergarten. No, backup about 28 years. I was Private Christian Schooled K-12th and Luke was both Public Schooled and Private Schooled. It was a HUGE decision for us to send her and Mr. Smiley to public school this year. I'm talking HUGE!!!!!!
This was just ONE reason I, in particular, wanted to keep them home a little bit longer. Although, I have learned this year, amongst a host of other things, that influences in our local public school are pretty much identical to the influences I had growing up in a Private Christian School. But that's for a whole 'nother post.
Back to story:
Precious Jewel leaned over and guiltily whispered, "It means freak and stupid." She hung her head as if she was tainted forever.
Whew!!! My mind (as was Luke's) was racing a thousand miles a minute on how we were going to delicately explain the real words to our 7 and 5 year-old.
Mr. Smiley had overheard her explanation and gravely declared. "Ohhhhh, it is very very bad to call someone a freak or stupid. What does freak mean daddy?"
That one I had no problem explaining.

That sounds an awful lot like our house and the "sh-bad word" ;)
Andrew has picked up the word "Shut Up" and Matt thinks the world is coming to an end each and every time. ;)
Glad she's not being too tainted -- since my son is at the same school! ;)
